Many sewers fear working with curved paper pieces because they are not sure how to wrap and secure the fabric around the curved edges! But don’t be scared! 😊
Nancy will guide you through the process: from fabric preparation, covering the curved shapes, to stitching your Dresden Plate flower and finally applique onto a background.
Learn how to prepare and how to cut the fabric for your petal paper pieces (⏯️ 1.04) and be shown how to cover the individual petal shapes, step by step (⏯️ 2.26) using the Thread-basting method.
Nancy guides you through all the important points when covering the round edges of the paper pieces and tells you what to watch out for to get lovely ‘smooth’ edged results. When the petals are finished, they are carefully whip stitched together (⏯️ 7.48).
Be shown how to ‘cast off’ (⏯️ 9.41) when you come to the end of your thread and see how the petals are sewn into a ‘roundel’ (⏯️ 10.41) before the centre circle is added (⏯️ 13.55).
Nancy shows you how the circle is first basted into place and then ‘appliqued’ (⏯️ 16.42), before you are able to remove the tacking stitches (⏯️ 18.45) and remove the central circle paper piece (⏯️ 19.53).
When the flower is finished Nancy guides you through the process of appliqueing the flower onto a piece of background fabric (⏯️ 20.01).
Learn how to ‘cast off’ (⏯️ 22.10) when you applique and when you are finished, how best to remove the tacking stitches (⏯️ 22.25) that held the flower to the background fabric. Now you can trim back the excess background fabric behind the appliqued flower (⏯️ 23.03), before finally the petal paper pieces are removed (⏯️ 23.41).
At the end of the tutorial Nancy discusses the differences between different Dresden Plate type flowers (⏯️ 26.10) and what to look out for when choosing your Dresden Plate paper pieces.
When you have mastered the Dresden Plate paper pieces you can go further and learn to tackle pieces with ‘inward’ curves’ – which is shown in the 2nd Curves Tutorial. 😊
About Nancy Adamek
--------
‘I have been a keen Quilter for the last 30 years and had my passion for quilting passed on to me by my mother Lillian Adamek. Lillian was a completely self-taught Quilter who founded the first local quilt group in Hamm (Germany) when I was a teenager in the 80’s. She went on to teach quilt classes at the adult education centre and organised annual quilt shows for many years. She actually got me into quilting by refusing to make me a quilt! And although I was very cross with her initially, I am eternally grateful for her stubbornness today. Once I started sewing my first quilt I never looked back: What a wonderful hobby!
Mum and I always dreamed of having our own quilting business together. Sadly she passed away in 2006. But her legacy lives on: ‘Lillian & Nancy’ – Li-Na = Lina Patchwork.
