A virtual walk on the French Military Cemetery at Machelen-aan-de-Leie.
I have put a lot of time and work into this tour : take your time to discover all the photos & stories.
750 French soldiers and 1 British airman have their resting place on this cemetery, in the small & quiet village of Machelen-aan-de-Leie (Flanders, Belgium).
The French effort is often underestimated in the offensives that took place in Flanders.
In this virtual tour you can find out about the British airman Philip Frederick Cormack, the many Muslim graves and some of Chinese workers. Also some iconic views of the old cemetery in the 1930's are included.
You can also find the grave of the 22-year-old Auguste Cadiou who died in Desselgem, at café Sint-Andries. According to the diary of the Desselgem pastor : "He was hit in the mouth, and died at the café...' This was three weeks before the end of the war...
