Every horse’s training journey begins with understanding.
In this video, Jordan works with shylo’s bucking during an undersaddle session. The focus today is on loping out without bucking.
*disclaimer
Because I already know the comments are gonna run straight to being you don’t need to whip whipping is unnecessary. You don’t have to hit the Horse make it move. Why did you whip the horse?
No, let’s think this through
That “whip”
Is the end of the Hackamore‘s lead rope
It is a big soft cotton rope with two leather pieces that make noise at the end
It literally has a very little pain level to it
Also note some history
This mare successfully bucks its owners off.
And has done so several times, resulting in broken bones
This is a chronic issue, a chronic behaviour that has become dangerous
And as you all know, if you’ve been here long enough, these type of horses are my favourite because there is an underlying issue stemming from pain
And my favourite kind of clients are the ones who give me the greenlight to book their Horse with our our Vet and let us find the problem and then treat the problem
Because I know when I watch this mare unload and go into its pen, I knew she was sore
And I already showed the owners what I was seeing and walked them through the issues that I think this horse has
So we are giving her a daily medication for an arthritis, but I’ve already told them this is not taking the edge off and that she’s going to need a regular maintenance program of injections
Which the owners have agreed and we have booked this Horse in with our vet to get some x-rays and testing done and ultimately injections which they have agreed to keep up on with her
And the reason why these are my favourite is because we can see the problem we can see the behaviour and I trust in the science and knowledge of our vets to be able to help support this kind of Horse in their pain management so that they can go on and become steady, willing and fun partners for their human humans.
Horses often express confusion or uncertainty through behaviors like [crowding, pushing into space, tension, rushing, etc]. Through clear communication and consistent pressure and release, we help the horse understand where comfort and relaxation can be found.
Good horsemanship is not about force — it’s about timing, feel, and helping the horse discover the right answer.
Follow along as we document the training journey and development of each horse.
New videos documenting real horse training sessions are posted regularly.
