STORYLINE:

Fireworks lit up Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour on Wednesday night in celebration of China's National Day.

The fifteen-minute pyrotechnic display featured a total of 19-thousand 800 fireworks, at a cost of more than 300-thousand US dollars.

Thousands of locals and tourists lined both sides of Victoria harbour to watch the display, which ended a long day of celebrations across China to mark the 54th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Hong Kong leader Tung Chee-hwa marked the start of National Day by attending a flag-raising ceremony earlier in the day.

About 20 pro-democracy activists, who were demanding an end to one-party rule in China and other alleged abuses, scuffled with police who held them back from the flag-raising event.

Hong Kong was handed back to China from Britain six years ago but retains civil liberties including free-speech rights that would be unheard of in the mainland - and protests are common.

During a demonstration on last year's National Day, activists torched a Chinese flag - a crime in Hong Kong.

One was convicted in March and got a three-month suspended sentence.
