FS Insider welcomes one of the most respected experts on AI and China, Dr. Kai-fu Lee, former president of Google China and a founding director of Microsoft Asia, to discuss his latest book, AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order. In this interview, Lee explains why AI is advancing so quickly and the race now underway between the world’s two largest countries, the US and China, to become the dominant AI superpower.
Dr. Kai-Fu first explains how most Chinese thought that computers would not be able to beat a human at the ancient game of Go because of the human intuition and creativity required to play. However, when AlphaGo, developed by Google DeepMind defeated the reigning champion of Go and awakened the Chinese to just how far artificial intelligence had come. This was like a Sputnik moment, he says, which lead to a massive push by the Chinese to invest in AI research and development.
Dr. Kai-Fu Lee also discusses how most, if not all, current AI breakthroughs in recent years can be traced to the development of deep learning in the United States in Canada, and why the Chinese may very likely jump ahead in the application of this technology due to the vast amount of data they have on Chinese citizens and their willingness to use it.
