Bumpy Landing RC-135 Rivet Joint at RAF Mildenhall | Strong Winds
What makes today's RAF Mildenhall different from other U.S. Air Force bases is the diversity of the units assigned here. With units from four different major commands -- Air Combat Command, Air Force Special Operations Command, Air Mobility Command and U.S. Air Forces in Europe.
The 100th Air Refuelling Wing is RAF Mildenhall's current host wing and the only permanent U.S. air refuelling wing in the European theatre, activated here on February 1, 1992. The wing provides the critical air refuelling "bridge" that allows the Expeditionary Air Force to deploy around the globe on a moment's notice.
The C-135 family is similar in appearance to the commercial Boeing 707 but designed to unique military specifications and dates back to the late 1950s early 1960s.
