For centuries, no woman had ever spoken inside a Khap Panchayat.
Then, an 82-year-old woman named Santosh Devi stood up and changed history.
Raised in a society where women were expected to remain behind the veil, Santosh Devi never went to school. She spent most of her life farming, cooking, raising children, and following traditions she would later question herself.
But everything changed when she joined the campaign led by social activist Sunil Jaglan against female foeticide in Haryana.
At a time when the birth of daughters was under threat in many villages across North India, Santosh Devi became the first woman to address a Khap Panchayat - an institution where women had never been allowed to participate before.
As she spoke before thousands of people, someone tried to cut her microphone as a sign of protest. But her voice carried far beyond the stage.
