It's estimated 100,000 birds come to the Kimiwan Lake area near McLennan. That includes 230 different species.
Up to 5,000 Franklin's Gulls a day come here to feed on insects. In September, up to 10,000 geese and 30,000 ducks stage here, putting on some weight before the long flight south.
In fall, bird counters have recorded 6,900 swans in a single day.
The Kimiwan Lake Naturalists operate an interpretive centre near Kimiwan Lake that's open to the public from May through September. The area is a bird watchers paradise with boardwalks that allow one to get up over top of the marshes and close to the birds.
