The naretha bluebonnet parrot (Northiella narethae) is a native Australian parrot that lives in the south west of Australia; making their home on the mall belt, on the fringe of the desert. These homelands are climatically hostile, subject to extreme weather variations and is extremely isolated. Every day is a survival challenge for any animal trying to live out there, added to these harsh conditions are the ever changing pressures of human utilisation of the lands.
The naretha bluebonnet was subject to a captive breeding program in the 1990’s, at the instigation of a West Australian aviculturist, Harry Neesham; and resulted in a collaboration between local West Australian aviculturists and the then West Australian Conservation and Land Management Department (CALM)… a division of the WA State Government. This captive breeding strategy was a radical move for the time and was a response to the poaching and shipment of large numbers of wild trapped narethas to overseas destinations. The true tragedy being the method of poaching, where precious, and extremely limited suitable breeding trees were “chopped out” to remove the narethas eggs, and nestlings. Trees are extremely limited in the homelands, each one is precious. The plan was that if these parrots were readily available in captive locations, the value of the parrots would decrease and the level of poaching would decrease, if not stop altogether. The uniqueness of this particular captive breeding program was that it placed the parrots in the care of everyday aviculturists, not zoos or Government run facilities, and the aviculturists had to fund all the program requirements, from DNA testing to government staff supervision. The aviculturists were challenged to breed the captive caught parrots and eventually were granted ownership of progeny. The Government maintained ownership of a percentage of progeny, and they would auction off these parrots to the general public to further raise funds for other fauna programs. The hope was that these auctioned parrots would become endemic in the backyard aviaries of Australia, as such providing living DNA insurance for the wild population and also through accessibility reduce the demand for poaching wild birds.
It was from these auctioned progeny parrots that Birdman Dad first started on his very long, bumpy but admiration filled road with the very beautiful naretha bluebonnet parrot. A wonderful little parrot with a very big personality.
With limited accessible knowledge Birdman Dad started his journey to keep these parrots flourishing and is willing to share what ever knowledge he has gained to ensure this parrot stays on the planet for as long as possible into the future. He has established a Facebook page dedicated to the species… Naretha bluebonnet parrots of Australia and there is a podcast… BirdCast which features an episode on the naretha bluebonnet…
