A celebration of Galway’s maritime spirit returns for its third year with Currachs, Galway Hookers, markets, and family fun along the promenade.

An Tóstal returns to the shores of Galway Bay on Saturday and Sunday, 17–18 May
2025, marking its third year as a standout celebration of Galway’s seafaring heritage.
Organised by Galway Hooker Sailing Club, The Village Salthill and Galway Bay Boat
Tours, this year’s festival promises even more excitement both on and off the water.
On Saturday 17 May, from 12 noon to 4pm, the iconic Galway Hookers will take to the
Bay, their striking sails a symbol of centuries-old craftsmanship and culture. Along the
Salthill Promenade, visitors will enjoy a lively Tiny Traders Village Market, family fun activities and plenty of local entertainment.

On Sunday 18 May, from 11am to 6pm, the spotlight turns to the thrilling Currach rowing
races, a powerful and competitive tradition that’s sure to stir the spirit. The Galway
Hookers will sail again along the shore and the promenade will be buzzing with Tiny
Traders, entertainment and family-friendly events throughout the day.
The public are encouraged to explore and enjoy the many cafés, bars, and restaurants of
Salthill, where the local hospitality is as warm as the welcome.
The celebration will wrap up on Sunday evening at Blackrock Cottage, the presentation of cups and medals to the winning crews, all in the company of the sea air and live maritime spirit.
“An Tóstal is all about energy, tradition and community,” said Pete Kelly of The Village Salthill. “There’s something for everyone – from the roar of the Currachs to the laughter
of the families on the prom. It’s Galway at its best.”
Ciaran Oliver, Commodore of Galway Hooker Sailing Club, added, “Reviving An Tóstal
has been about reconnecting with our roots and celebrating what makes Galway unique.
We’re proud to open the Currach racing league and Hooker sailing here every year and
bring people together on land and sea.”
