Listen to the lovely song of the Japanese bush warbler - Horornis diphone.
Ubiquitous around Japan and a few islands around it, the Japanese bush warbler is also known as Japan's nightingale. Its distinctive song can be heard all through the islands from May onwards every year. This rarely seen little bird's song is one of the most important elements in the soundscape of Japan's springtime.
People have approximated the song onomatopoeically to Hooo-hokekyo. As usual with these imitation attempts, it falls short of the actual euphony encountered in nature. Spend enough time out in woodlands and nature parks and you will understand why this call is one of the iconic sounds of Japan.
