Swami Yogananda, the Himalayan spiritual master and Kriya yogi, talks about the birth of Jesus , highlighting significant events and characters surrounding his arrival. Mary gives birth in an animal shelter, placing her child Jesus - Immanuel in a box, coinciding with a sign foretold by the ancient prophets—a star that leads wise men to him. These priests, recognising the star's significance, journey to King Herod to enquire about the newborn. Herod, feeling threatened by the prospect of a rival, feigns ignorance. He issues a decree to kill all infants born within the year in response to the news of Jesus' birth.
The priests, after worshipping baby Jesus and presenting gifts of jewellery and perfumes, are warned in a dream not to return to Herod. They leave, while an angel instructs Joseph to flee to Greece for safety. After Herod's death, the angel appears again, telling Joseph it is safe to return, leading them to Nazareth. They accept the name Jesus for him, though his original name, Emmanuel, meaning "God is with us", is acknowledged as well. The narrative concludes with Jesus referred to as "the consciousness of Jesus consciousness", encapsulating his profound spiritual identity.
