In this moment from our Signal in the Noise event, designer and educator Queenie Wu reflects on what makes data visualization uniquely powerful: its ability to help people see themselves as part of a larger story. Selected from the audience to share her perspective, Queenie speaks to how data visualization connects individual experience to collective meaning.
Queenie describes data visualization as a space where many perspectives can coexist - where large, complex narratives are made legible through the contributions, experiences, and identities of many people. Because audiences can recognize their own role in the data, the relationship becomes participatory rather than passive, emphasizing the importance of listening, inclusion, and shared authorship.
This perspective aligns closely with the philosophy of SVA’s MPS in Data Visualization & Communication: designing not just for clarity, but for communication - where audiences are acknowledged as essential contributors to meaning, not just recipients of information.
