A day to remember in late fall as Winston our divorced local swan was displaying his grace and pure power on "Winston's pond". It took all season to capture these perfect breathtaking moments and melted my heart as Winston elegantly displayed slowly all of his 25,000 ruffled feathers! It was a moment well worth waiting for it felt like he knew it would be our last amazing visit together until spring. His finally grand performance was done while the colourful falling leaves covered the pond's banks. Winston does appear to enjoy the snow but soon will be heading to join the others at the swan's winter vacation motel in the park. He can handle the colder temperatures but needs open water during the winter and unfortunately the pond freezes over. Nature at its best!

Did you know?
Swans adapt to winter through insulation from feathers and fat, a countercurrent heat exchange system in their feet, and behavioral adaptations like tucking their bill under a wing. Thick, downy feathers provide insulation, while a gland near their tail produces oil to make outer feathers waterproof, helping to trap warm air. Feet, the countercurrent system allows blood to flow from the warm body to the cold feet, but veins carry heat from the warm arterial blood to the cold venous blood before it returns to the body, keeping feet just above freezing. When it's extremely cold, they tuck their bills under a wing to protect them and breathe warm air.

Winston Story:
-Divorced male royal mute swan. Nickname: Aka: Henry. Divorced from Scarlett they both had 3 surviving cygnets in 2024. Scarlett left Winston for Will in the spring of 2025 just before April release to the park. Scarlett and & Will moved to Happy hills resort in Embro, and they had cygnets. Winston wanders to "Winston's pond" every season for several years, where he stayed there alone this past season.
