In short: When we arrive at a project with a "let’s see if this works" attitude, we leave the door open for dread. This video is about to eliminating the "ifs," killing off the side quests, and committing to the one goal that matters.
The Weight of the Void
The moment you step into a new studio, a new project, or even just a new day, you are met with a vacuum. If you don't fill that space with intent, the "Void" fills it with dread. We often think dread is a signal of advance failure, but really, it’s just the presence of
a) too much space
b) too many options
These two create a feeling of creative dread which can incapacitate you.
You take the "ifs" out by ritualising your process.
What are you doing each time you to to the studio?
Make it repeatable.
For many of us, the creative process is stifled by "Side Quest Paradox." We spend our best energy on admin, social media, and the "business" of being an artist, leaving only the scraps for the art itself. I’m learning to design for consequence—to make sure that every hour spent in this room has a measurable impact on the work. We want our time to be consequential, but to do that we need to know what the hell we're doing.
The Creative Compass
🌑 Eliminating the "If" — Dread thrives in uncertainty. By deciding that the work is already in motion before you start, you remove the vacuum that fear occupies.
☀️ The North Star Principle — Identifying your "One Goal" (like my album Chromatic Zero) allows you to say no to the "Side Quest Paradox" that drains your creative battery.
🚪 Spatial Assignment — Why physical boundaries matter. This room is for the work; the admin stays outside. When you enter the space, your brain knows the mission.
🌊 Repetition as a reality — you need to find what you can repeat: that's how you build a life: transport the vision to the actual.
⏳ Consequential Time — Moving away from "busy work" and toward high-impact bursts where every action has a direct consequence on the final piece.
