Wild camping in Dartmoor National Park turned into a battle against brutal 50 MPH wind gusts as my ultralight tent was pushed to its absolutely limit on the exposed more. In this video I camp through a powerful windstorm in Dartmoor while fighting to keep my shelter from collapsing in the middle of the night.
This backpacking trip started at Burrator Reservoir, on the southwestern edge of Dartmoor, where the quiet forest trails slowly gave way to exposed moorland and sweeping views. The climb toward Sheep’s Tor set the tone early — rugged granite, endless sky, and wind that never seemed to stop.
We chose to camp high on the tor for night one. The winds were relentless. All evening the tent bent and snapped in the gusts; one of those wild camping moments where you question your campsite choice… but wouldn’t trade it for anything. The sunset light breaking through fast-moving clouds over the moor made it unforgettable.
On day two, we packed up and continued across the open landscape toward Princetown, crossing windswept grasslands scattered with granite tors and wild Dartmoor ponies roaming freely. The scale of the moor is hard to capture and it feels ancient, exposed, and completely untamed.
By evening, we descended to the banks of the peaceful East Dart River, where we made camp for night two. After the chaos of the first night’s wind, the quiet flow of the river felt grounding. A still, calm contrast to the raw energy of the moor above.
On day three, we packed up and hiked out under shifting skies and classic Dartmoor conditions, while finishing a trek that was both physically demanding and deeply rewarding.
🎒 In this video you’ll see:
• Hiking across the rugged moorland of Dartmoor
• Camp set high on Sheep’s Tor in relentless winds
• Rolling grasslands and free-roaming Dartmoor ponies
• A peaceful riverside camp along the East Dart River
• Wild camping in remote English countryside
• Three days of immersive backpacking through Devon
This is one of those trips that reminds you why Dartmoor is one of the most rugged and rewarding backpacking destinations in England.
