Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical syndrome where there is a sudden and excessive breakdown of muscle fibre. This breakdown causes the release of the intracellular components of the muscle cell to enter general circulation. Excessive muscle breakdown is caused by either direct muscle injury or inadequate energy supply to the muscle cell. Muscle cell injury or energy depletion results is an excessive breakdown of the cell, leading to an intracellular influx of sodium and calcium. This causes sustained myofibril contraction, damage to the cytoskeleton of the muscle cell and rupture of the cellular membrane. Causes can either be traumatic or non-traumatic and symptoms can range from ranges from an asymptomatic illness to a life threatening condition.
