The Global Plastics Treaty: Can We End the Plastic Pollution?

Описание: In 2022, 175 nations adopted the Global Plastics Treaty, a landmark agreement aimed at cutting plastic production, improving waste management, and moving towards a circular economy. If fully implemented, the treaty could reduce plastic waste entering the oceans by over 80% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2040, while unlocking $70 billion in savings and creating more than 700,000 jobs worldwide.

Yet, progress is being slowed by fossil fuel and petrochemical interests resisting key measures such as production caps and chemical restrictions. Without strong commitments and binding agreements, plastic pollution will continue to devastate oceans, wildlife, and human health.

The world is drowning in plastic — with over 8 billion tonnes produced since 1950 and only 9% ever recycled. Asia remains at the centre of this crisis, as countries like China, India, and the Philippines continue to generate and mismanage millions of tonnes of plastic waste each year.

The Global Plastics Treaty is one of the most critical opportunities of our time. Its success depends on international collaboration, accountability, and urgent action. The question now is: will the world rise to the challenge and end the plastics crisis?
