This wonderful hymn, found in many Christian hymnals, is not sung often in church services because it is a closing hymn for the end of the day. There is nothing more merciful after a laborious day, than being at peace. We first discovered this hymn looking through our German hymnal just for fun, and fell in love with it, so we had to include both English and German. Written by a Lutheran Priest in 1867 of originally 8 verses, this masterful 4-part musical setting was written shortly after by Joseph Barnby. The steady soprano line is surrounded by the lull and rocking movement of the harmonies. The simplicity is soothing yet profound.
