Loretta Saunders was a 26-year-old pregnant Inuk university student at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was writing her honors thesis on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIWG) when her own roommates, Blake Leggette and Victoria Henneberry, brutally murdered her over just $430 in unpaid rent.
After killing Loretta in her own home, the couple stuffed her body in a hockey bag, placed her in the trunk of her own car, and fled across Canada. They then sent text messages to her family and boyfriend from Loretta's phone — pretending to be her — while attempting to access her bank accounts.
Loretta's body was discovered on February 26, 2014, on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway near Salisbury, New Brunswick. Blake Leggette was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years for first-degree murder. Victoria Henneberry received life with no parole for 10 years for second-degree murder.
Loretta Saunders' tragic death became a catalyst for change in Canada, helping to launch the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), which published its final report in 2019 with 231 Calls for Justice.
This is her story — told with respect, facts, and a commitment to justice.
