Описание: RIP to the great and kind Darick Campbell. What a tremendous loss.
In 2006 the Campbell Brothers, my favorite band whom I had only met once, reached out through their manager to check on me post-Katrina. I told them we would use some Campbell style healing in NOLA. Their manager said "give us a reason!".
I contacted the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, who were doing miracle level work supporting the music community in every way possible, and they fronted the $ for us to do a benefit. When I proposed it to the Campbells, they checked out the clinic to see what it was about, and then volunteered to play the show for no fee, just get us there and put us up.
They allowed me to produce my dream show in a tiny, out of the way bar, and call a slew of musicians had never heard of or met. The Campbells told me afterwards that they it would be messy, a bunch of NOLA folks doin their thang while the Campbells did theirs. But our peeps came prepared, and the Campbells ran with it. It was true magic. $6000 came through the door for the Clinic, covering all costs and with a fat chunk left over to benefit the clinic.

The Campbells had done an instrumental version of "Change Is Gonna Come" on their "Can You Feel It Album", with Darick playing the melody in C#. Terrance Simien was slated to sing it at the show, but blew his voice out after a Jazz Fest set and singing on set 1 of the benefit. And he does it in G, so the horns were set for that. Darick said "I'll sing it" and I said "you'll sing it?". He said "yeah, I'll sing it" and made the lap steel motion with his hand. Transpose a tri-tone on the fly? No sweat. And what a performance....

Chuck Campbell had the foresight to record the show, and I called a camera crew. And 14 years later I finally taught myself to edit video yesterday (poorly, but I tried!) so this beautiful performance by Darick could finally be seen.

Here 'tis y'all. Thank you Darick for everything, and to the entire Campbell band and family for their kindness and generosity.
