Did you know that the orchid is one of the oldest growing blooms in the botanical world? Research reveals that the orchid was flourishing at the same time the dinosaurs walked the planet. Recent evidence dates fossil finds back 65 million years. To me that really is amazing! The dinosaurs have long gone and to date there are around about 28 thousand varieties in existence. Pretty impressive.

In regard to the giant king proteas, evidence reveals that these are not quite as old but can be dated back 300 million years. Imagine if they could speak! What stories or lessons could they teach us. So, in honour of their longevity, enduring strength and uniqueness, this design is to special attributes.

Things to gather:
Container of our choice. I reached for one of my favourites – classic white urn.
Chicken mess wire or foam to fill container. This will be necessary to hold the blooms in place. the heavy character of both really do need support.
2 spikes or stems of green cymbidium orchids or a colour to suit your personal preference.
Green ferns of your choice. Unfortunately, those in my garden are still hibernating after the winter, so I’ve opted to use artificial ferns with a few fresh fronds.
A couple of giant white King Protea.
Optional – few twisty willow branches & moss/balls to cover for additional visual and textural interest.
