1. German Shepherds were the first kind of Service Dog.
What are service dogs? Service dogs are dogs that assist people with issues they may suffer from and require help. One type of service dog that is very common is a seeing eye dog. These dogs help blind or vision impaired people to go about their day to day activities and assist them by helping them stop when crossing a road, protect them from harm as well as being a loyal companion and friend.
2. A German Shepherd is actually called a German Shepherd Dog. It is one of the few types of dogs to use the word Dog in the title. This was to allow people to recognize the difference between a German Shepherd, who handled livestock, and the German Shepherd Dog…which was a dog.
3. German Shepherd Dogs are the 2nd most popular dog in the USA. The reason is because of how diverse German Shepherds are. They are popular as a family dog, a guard dog, performance dog, show dog, military and police dogs and like we mentioned earlier, service dogs. German Shepherds can pretty much be any kind of dog you want or need them to be.
4. German Shepherds are very protective of their owners. German Shepherds understand who feeds them, loves them, takes care of them and has them become part of the family. Because of this, German Shepherds are very protective and can act aggressive towards strangers and sometimes other dogs as well. It is important that German Shepherds are made aware from their owners that the people or other dogs entering their area are welcomed and then we’ll usually be OK and will not act aggressive to protect our owners or the children in the family. If the German shepherd sees that other people are welcomed into the same home they will allow them to come but we will always pay attention to anyone who is not a part of the normal household.
5. Out of 100 popular dog breeds, studies have shown that German Shepherds are the 3rd most intelligent.
6. They have a double coat of fur. The outer coat sheds all year around which can cause people who have dog allergies to suffer from German Shepherd fur.
7. They are incredibly smart and learn simple tasks after only five repetitions. They obey the first given command 95% of the time.
8. A German Shepherd’s bite has 238 pounds of force. If that doesn’t make sense to you or you can’t figure out how strong that is, compare it to an adult human — a human’s bite has just 86 pounds of force! That is almost 3x’s as strong as a person bites. WOW!
9. German Shepherd Dogs weren’t always called German Shepherd Dogs. After the 2 World Wars, many people felt odd calling a them German Shepherds so they renamed them just “Shepherd Dogs.” In Europe, people started to call them Alsations. These names lasted until 1977, but lasted so long that some people in Europe still call them Alsations and are confused when they hear them called German Shepherd Dogs.
10. THE AVERAGE LIFESPAN OF GERMAN SHEPHERDS IS 10.95 YEARS. They can grow to 26 inches tall and can weigh up to 95 pounds.
