USA Today reports that the Obama Administration is facing a tough call following a federal judge's ruling that prevents the military from enforcing its "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.
If the administration appeals the decision in support of the policy, it will receive flak from gay rights advocates who already claim Obama was slow to overturn the discriminatory policy.
Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said, "The President has said this law harms our national security and we believe it would be a mistake to appeal the decision. Each additional day that this unjust law remains in force is one more day the federal government is complicit in discrimination."
However, if the administration decides to let the ruling stand, it stands to face harsh criticism from social conservatives, who are calling the judge's ruling an attempt to advance a liberal social agenda through the military.
The Justice Department has appealed past decisions against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and may seek an injunction against the current ruling.
However, there is the possibility that the Obama administration and Congress may end the military practice on their own, with the Pentagon preparing a report on how to integrate openly gay men and women into the service.
