If you're trying to conceive and your partner has teratospermia (abnormally shaped sperm), should you go straight to IVF or try IUI first?
Sperm morphology is a key part of the semen analysis. Men with a low percentage of normal looking sperm are diagnosed with teratospermia. In the past, some evidence suggested these men had lower IUI success rates, leading some doctors to recommend skipping IUI and going directly to IVF.
But new research challenges this approach. A recent study analyzed sperm morphology right before IUI procedures. Couples with poor sperm morphology had similar IUI pregnancy rates to those with normal morphology.
The takeaway? Men with teratospermia do not necessarily need to jump right to IVF. Couples should still consider trying IUI first, before taking on the higher costs and invasive procedures of IVF.
Watch this video to learn more about how sperm morphology affects fertility, and whether you should try IUI or go straight to IVF.
