Previously, you could activate Vanish Mode by opening a conversation, tapping the user’s name at the top, and enabling features like Vanish Mode or Secret Conversations. These options allowed messages to disappear after being seen or when the chat was closed. However, in 2025, these features are either merged into or replaced by Facebook’s expanded use of encrypted chats.

Messenger now prioritizes end-to-end encrypted chats by default or allows users to turn it on manually. This means your conversations are encrypted in such a way that only you and the person you're chatting with can read them—not even Facebook or Meta can access the messages. This shift makes Vanish Mode mostly unnecessary from a security perspective.

To check if you have encryption enabled, open Messenger and tap the menu icon in the bottom right corner. Then go to “Settings” and tap “Privacy and Safety.” Under this menu, you’ll see the “End-to-End Encrypted Chats” section.
