FBI Fires About 20 Agents for Kneeling at 2020 George Floyd Protest, Union Calls Move Unlawful
In a controversial move, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has dismissed approximately 20 agents who were photographed kneeling during the 2020 George Floyd protests in Washington, D.C., sources familiar with the matter say.
Initially reassigned earlier this year, the agents were formally terminated on September 26, 2025. The exact number has not been confirmed by the FBI, but two people familiar with the decision told the Associated Press the figure is “roughly 20.”
The FBI Agents Association swiftly condemned the dismissals, calling them “unlawful” and accusing FBI Director Kash Patel of undermining morale, due process, and institutional integrity. They noted that several of the terminated agents were military veterans who held additional legal protections.
The kneeling gesture was originally viewed by some as an attempt at de-escalation during tense protests following George Floyd’s killing. At the time, the FBI (under Director Christopher Wray) found no violation of bureau policy and did not discipline agents.
Critics argue the firings are politically motivated and part of a broader purge at the bureau. Several of the dismissed agents are reportedly exploring legal action for wrongful termination.
The FBI declined to comment on personnel matters.
