HISTORIC PURCHASE OF LAND FOR NEW OLQA CATHOLIC CHURCH AND RELOCATION OF ST. MARK'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
What began 13 years ago as a somewhat ambitious proposal by Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic church to purchase the St. Mark Presbyterian Church property, which was not even for sale, has in fact resulted in that proposal being realized. In achieving this goal, the Catholics and Presbyterians worked together with exceptional cooperation. The Irvine Company made their land available for the St. Mark relocation site on favorable terms and the City of Newport Beach granted approval of the necessary land use permits.
This historic land purchase and church relocation all started because the OLQA Church needed to be seismically retrofitted to bring it into compliance with earthquake regulations.
In 1999 the OLQA Pastor and parish priests developed a plan to purchase St. Mark's Presbyterian Church property as the site for the new OLQA church. To carry out this plan, St. Mark needed to be relocated.
A survey concluded the only viable property that could be used for relocating St. Mark's church and school was on the corner of Macarthur and San Joaquin Hills Rd. on property owned by The Irvine Company.
Former Newport Beach Mayor and OLQA parish member, Dennis O'Neil, along with the Bishop of Orange, the OLQA Pastor, and members of senior management of The Irvine Company held a series of meetings regarding the relocation of St. Mark's church to the new location.
Both churches retained architects and other professional consultants to plan and design their new churches. Fundraising campaigns to raise the necessary funds to pay for the projects was started.
On October 12, 2004, the Newport Beach City Council approved the land use entitlement permits and certified the Environmental Impact Report to allow the development of the St. Mark project on The Irvine Company property.
Shortly after that The Irvine Company property was transferred to St. Mark ownership and title to the St. Mark property was transferred to the Diocese of Orange.
On September 7, 2006 the Newport Beach Planning Commission approved the conditional use permit for the OLQA new church and school expansion. Final approval was granted by the Newport Beach City Council on November 14, 2006.
Construction of the first phase of the OLQA new church was commenced in July of 2011 and completed in December 2012.
ARCHITECTURAL THEME OF NEW OUR LADY QUEEN OF ANGELS CATHOLIC CHURCH
"FAITH IS A JOURNEY TOWARD THE LIGHT AND THE LIGHT IS CHRIST"
The architectural theme of new church building is that faith is a journey of many steps, leading toward the light and the true light of the world is Jesus Christ.
World renown and award winning lighting architect Francis Karhe designed the many lighting features that are reflected in the new Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
Francis Karhe & Associates, Inc. is recognized worldwide as a leading architectural lighting design firm. They understand lighting technology, planning, architecture, electrical engineering, lighting fixture design and manufacturing. They have a 23 year history of award winning design and construction projects.
The lighting theme is first seen at the front doors of the church which represents an important passage way on the journey of faith. The doors are eleven feet high and made of steel and onyx glass. With the light shinning through the onyx, the light represents moving toward the light of Christ.
As one steps inside the church and walks down the main aisle ten pews and stops, looks around, the lighting will draw the eye to the central point of the church - the altar area and the cross.
The altar is the main symbol of Christ in every church and is placed as the central focus of the church. It is made of white marble quarried in Spain. The 'mensa' or top piece of the altar weighs 7,000 lbs. The four supporting stones symbolize the four gospels. The white marble catches the light from several different directions and illuminates the entire altar area.
The seven stained glass windows represent the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church and are visible on the east side of the church to all who pass on Jamboree Road, one of the main streets in Newport Beach. The reflecting light from the stain glass windows are reflected in a multitude of colors on the inside walls of the church. The reflections change colors throughout the day as the sun moves from east to west.
THE CROSS
The cross atop the new Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic church stands eighty-eight (88) feet above the ground at the top of the new bell tower.
The Cross of Christ is the most universally recognized symbol of Jesus and Christianity.
