Cannabis (Marijuana)
Originally from Asia, now global. The female flowers contain the highest concentration of active compounds. The main one is THC, with CBD also important. Cannabis usually makes people feel relaxed, light, and sometimes euphoric. It can change how time and colors are perceived and may increase appetite. Smoked cannabis acts quickly and lasts a few hours, while edibles take longer but last longer. Risks include anxiety, fast heartbeat, memory problems, and in some cases, a higher chance of psychosis. It can also cause dependence and is risky during pregnancy or with alcohol.
Psilocybin Mushrooms (Shrooms)
Certain mushrooms contain psilocybin, which the body converts to psilocin. These affect serotonin in the brain and create hallucinations, dream-like states, and sometimes spiritual feelings. Colors and sounds may seem more intense, but confusion or fear can also occur. Effects begin within an hour and last 4–6 hours. The greatest danger comes from accidentally eating toxic mushrooms that look similar. Other risks are panic attacks, worsened mental health conditions, and rare long-term perception issues.
Khat
A plant native to East Africa and Yemen, traditionally chewed fresh. Its active compounds are similar to mild amphetamines. Khat gives energy, reduces tiredness, and increases talkativeness, but it can cause insomnia, anxiety, and loss of appetite. Overuse affects gums and teeth, and raises blood pressure. Effects start while chewing and last a few hours. It can also cause dependence over time.
Kratom
A Southeast Asian tree related to coffee. Its leaves contain compounds that act both as stimulants in low doses and pain relievers in higher doses. People use it for energy, relaxation, or relief from discomfort. Effects start within an hour and last several hours. Risks include nausea, constipation, dependence, liver problems, and in combination with other depressants, slowed breathing.
Opium
Extracted from the poppy plant, opium contains morphine and codeine. It produces comfort, pain relief, and drowsiness, but also slows breathing and digestion. This can lead to severe constipation and potentially fatal overdose, especially when mixed with alcohol or sedatives. Strong dependence and difficult withdrawal are common risks.
Datura
A dangerous plant found in many parts of the world. It contains alkaloids like atropine and scopolamine that cause delirium and hallucinations. Users often lose touch with reality and may see or talk to things that are not there. Physical effects include dry mouth, dilated pupils, high heart rate, and fever. Because the dose is unpredictable, poisoning and even death are common.
Salvia divinorum
A sacred plant from Mexico, containing salvinorin A, which acts on unique brain receptors. It causes a very short but intense trip, sometimes making users feel they are in another world or not human. Effects appear within seconds and fade in 20 minutes. Risks include accidents due to loss of coordination, panic, and frightening hallucinations.
Ayahuasca
A traditional Amazonian brew made with plants that combine DMT with natural MAO inhibitors. It causes strong visions, emotional experiences, and often vomiting as part of the ritual. The trip lasts 4–6 hours. While used in spiritual settings, risks include dangerous drug interactions (with antidepressants), blood pressure changes, and worsening of mental illness.
LSA (Lysergic Acid Amide)
Found in seeds such as morning glory and Hawaiian baby woodrose. Related to LSD but much weaker. It causes dream-like states and mild visuals but often brings nausea and cramps. Effects start slowly (over an hour) and last several hours. Risks include cold/numb limbs due to blood vessel constriction and poisoning from treated commercial seeds.
