When you bring a lawsuit seeking money as a form of compensation for all the harms, losses and damages you suffered because of someone's carelessness, you will be required to answer questions in a pretrial process called a deposition. Lawyers also call it an examination before trial. The answers that you give, represent your sworn testimony and carry the same exact weight as if you're testifying in court, at trial, in front of a judge and jury.
In the weeks and days leading up to this questioning, you have the perception that this is your opportunity to tell the opposing lawyer every single event of every single interaction you've had with any doctor, physician's assistant, nurse and therapist. You can't wait to describe in detail all of the minute details of what occurred before the event, what happened during the event and what happened after the event up till today.
You know your attorney will be proud that you can remember all these minute details of your case. At least, that's your perception.
However, before you begin to think about your answers to questions about what happened, you need to understand first the real purpose of a deposition. It's not what you think it is.
