IT professionals across Kerala and India are working under outdated labour laws that were written decades before the digital age. Even today, most IT companies operate under the Kerala Shops & Commercial Establishments Act, 1960, which offers no legal Right to Disconnect from work after office hours.
With over 1200 IT companies and 1.5 lakh IT employees in Kerala alone, the sector has grown rapidly—but worker protections have not. Long working hours, frequent night shifts, and constant digital connectivity have made the IT industry one of the most mentally and physically polluting sectors.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), Indians work 47–70 hours per week, making India one of the most overworked countries in the world. IT professionals are at the top of this list. Meanwhile, IT workers in countries like Germany, Australia, and the USA earn significantly higher salaries while working strict 8-hour days.
This is no longer just a workplace issue—it has become a public health concern.
The Right to Disconnect Bill 2025 aims to protect IT professionals from overwork and digital exploitation. Although introduced as a private bill, it can become law only if IT professionals raise their voices together and make this a national conversation.
