STORYLINE
Travel between Indian and Pakistan will soon be much easier for nationals of both countries, after the signing of a new bilateral agreement.
Indian External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh announced the opening of Indian and Pakistani Consulates General there and in the Indian city of Mumbai, respectively, during a visit to Karachi on Tuesday.
Singh added the Indian visa service in Karachi would start in January.
The minister, who arrived in the metropolis on a two-day visit on Tuesday evening, called on Sindh's Governor, Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan, for an informal chat.
Singh was accompanied by Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, Indian High Commissioner Shiv Shankar Menon and other officials.
The visit was the first trip for Singh, a former Indian envoy to Pakistan, to Karachi in over two decades.
Governor Ishrat said that the visit of the Indian minister would help strengthen the current peace process between India and Pakistan.
Singh also met the Chief Minister of the province of Sindh, Dr. Arbab Rahim.
In a news conference following the meeting Rahim welcomed the opening of the consulates in Karachi and Mumbai, saying it would be of great relief to many families separated since the partition of the sub-continent.
Singh said relations between the two countries were improving and the resumption of the building of a new train and road link between the countries, the Khokhrapar-Munabao service, would help further improve these ties.
The meeting ended with the traditional gift of a shawl and hat to the guest.
