In this episode, I start with a disorienting wake-up at McKinley View Lodge, marked by stunning views of Denali Peak. After a hearty breakfast, I embark on the scenic, yet mostly unpaved, Denali Highway. It’s over 100 miles of mostly dirt, but I’ve been told it’s one of the most beautiful roads in Alaska—and I can’t wait to find out for myself. During the ride, I encounter the Alaska oil pipeline, discussing its impressive engineering and safety measures that allow it to endure earthquakes.
I then hike to the Castner ice cave, which, although not as impressive as expected, provides some good exercise. The journey continues through notable Alaskan locations towards Delta Junction, Tok, and Chicken, before reaching Eagle, near the Canadian border.
