Chelvanaya "Naya" Gabriel demonstrates the intersection of Art and Activism - Artivism. Inspired by Audre Lorde, Naya uses art to explore the notion that wellness itself is a radical political act and creative expression is key to healing and liberating ourselves. Naya Gabriel (they/them) is a queer non-bi nary POC artivist who has been creating with acrylics and mixed media for the last three years with shows around the Valley. They grew up in South Hadley, studied chemistry and Asian Studies at Mount Holyoke College and worked in pharmaceuticals before spending the last 15 years as a lab manager in the sciences at Hampshire College.
They also have years of experience with social justice and wellness facilitation, community building, science education and creative writing/editing. They use their own lived experiences with invisible disabilities and neurodiversity coupled with their artistic practice to create spaces to explore and expand our collective wellness and resilience, demonstrating the Audre Lorde-in spired notion that wellness itself is a radical political act and creative expression is key to healing and liberating ourselves.
And they really love to experiment and play with materials, imagination, the subconscious and the infinite futures contained in every moment. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
