The forward-deployed military trauma hospital came alive just after nightfall, the wind still howling against the walls as if the blizzard had chased the helicopters all the way home. The trauma bay doors slammed open and medics poured in, shouting times and injuries as stretchers rolled across the floor. Alarms screamed. Monitors flashed. Boots slipped on melting snow mixed with blood that no one had time to clean.
A critically wounded male officer was rushed straight to the center table, chest torn open by shrapnel, blood pooling faster than hands could stop it. Surgeons crowded in, voices sharp, movements frantic. Behind them, almost forgotten, a female soldier was wheeled in last. Her tag read stable. She was parked against the wall, barely conscious, skin pale, body temperature sinking into dangerous territory. No one looked twice.
The tension tightened by the second. Hypothermia battled internal bleeding. Blood supplies ran thin. Exhaustion showed on every face. An attending surgeon snapped that there was no room for mistakes tonight.
The woman on the side watched everything with calm eyes. Her breathing stayed controlled. Her hands never shook. As a monitor began to falter, she whispered a warning about what was coming next. No one listened.
