Dorothy E. Johnson proposed the Behavioral System Model, which views the person as a behavioral system made up of interrelated and interdependent subsystems. Each subsystem has a specific function and works together to maintain balance, stability, and equilibrium in the individual’s behavior.
According to Johnson, health is a state of efficient and effective behavioral functioning, while illness occurs when there is imbalance or disruption in one or more subsystems. The role of nursing is to support, protect, and regulate the patient’s behavior by reducing stress, preventing disturbances, and restoring balance within the behavioral system.
The nurse acts as an external regulatory force, helping the patient adapt to internal and external environmental stressors so that behavioral equilibrium is maintained or regained.
