Route: Far North Line
Between Georgemas Junction (GGJ) and Wick (WCK) Stations
Crossing type: Automatic Open Crossing Locally-monitored by traincrew with Barriers (AOCL+B)
Filming location: B870, Mains of Watten (KW1 5UH)
An automatic level crossing found near the village of Watten and next to Loch Watten in Caithness, Highland. This is one of the UK's most northerly public level crossings, and it is very high up! It's also the last level crossing on the Far North Line before its terminus at Wick, about 7-10 minutes away by train. This level crossing was formerly un-gated, as you may be able to tell by one barrier being almost comedically long for the road, as well as the fact that the alarms turn off too early. There's a pair of new alarms at this crossing, as well as many giveaway signs of the former station here which closed in 1960.
This is the first of three successive times I caught this exact train on this exact service in this area, and the foul, Far North weather (very inclement and 'dreich') really played a part in this video, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
