Vatin – Bela Bara
Vatin is located in the north of Serbia. Between 1850 and 1800 BC – in the Bronze Age – the earliest settlement of the Vatin culture was built here on a narrow, elevated ridge bordered by water on three sides, covering an area of about two hectares.
The settlement was well-organised and arranged according to a predefined pattern. The river Moravica constituted the northern border; on the other side, the settlement was protected by a semicircular wooden palisade. There was an unoccupied area in the northern part, some kind of pitch, where probably all activities took place and which appeared immediately after crossing the river, probably via a bridge, and entering the settlement. The houses were aligned in several rows surrounding the central square of the settlement and extended radially, forming a semi-circular arrangement of the settlement.
BRONZE AGE
2,500–800 BC
In addition to agriculture and livestock farming, the economic basis of the Bronze Age was the introduction of bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, and with it bronze casting and new metalworking techniques.
