In this new Paul Phua Poker video, Timofey “Trueteller” Kuznetsov and Rui “PepperoniF” Cao share some valuable insights from bet-sizing and why it matters. https://www.paulphuapoker.com/bet-siz...
DO YOU EVER VARY YOUR BET SIZE PRE-FLOP?
RUI CAO: Pre-flop, it’s almost the same size in most of the situations for opening and 3 betting – basically it’s the same sizes all the time. It may be different from in position or out of position, but post-flop differs more – way more.
TIMOFEY KUZNETSOV: I think bet sizing post-flop is basically the main question or the main task of the No Limit Hold ‘Em game. It’s only the most important question, basically – what are your bet sizes? So, all you know about poker goes through your head when you’re picking your bet sizes, so it’s really, really hard to explain in a few words, but generally if you’re bluffing, you want to bet bigger, and if you’re value-betting, you want to bet smaller.
RUI CAO: Yeah, it’s a bit more complicated.
TIMOFEY KUZNETSOV: Yes, but I think it’s a good rule to go to.
RUI CAO: It’s about the more bluffs you can have here, the bigger you bet, and if, let’s say, people don’t expect you… or you don’t really have many bluff in in this situation, you bet smaller because you give them a price. If the price is not good for them then they’re not going to call. So, it’s basically this. It’s the percentage of bluffs and the percentage of value you can have in certain situations – and you can do some tricky, tricky stuff, but basically it’s like that.
WHEN MIGHT YOU OVER BET THE RIVER AS A BLUFF?
TIMOFEY KUZNETSOV: Usually when my opponent’s range doesn’t have too many very big hands. When I know that he can’t have the real nuts, so it’s hard for him to have an easy call, so all the calls he can make will be really tough calls. In those situations, you can expect him to call fold quite often – if he’s not, like, angry with you or something.
RUI CAO: Yes, the same. When they really can’t have the nuts, you go all in because you can bluff more like this because you can know they can’t have the nuts, basically.
DO YOU CHANGE YOUR BET SIZING FOR TOURNAMENTS?
TIMOFEY KUZNETSOV: It shouldn’t really differ too much but probably you bet slightly smaller in tournaments on average because your stack is shallower.
RUI CAO: I think you take less risk in general in tournaments because you’re shorter and so I think you bet smaller in general.
IS YOUR BET SIZING BASED ON MATH OR INTUITION ABOUT YOUR OPPONENT?
TIMOFEY KUZNETSOV: When you’re playing in the game you have no time for any mathematical formulas. I guess you just need to think, exactly like you said, is this person going to call me with this hand or is he going to fold this hand? You just take your opinion on what you think they might do. But if you’re trying to work on your game or analyze something – like you have a pen and paper and just try to break down the hand – then you can go to math formulas and just see what the percentages of the range ...blah, blah, blah and do stuff like that.
RUI CAO: I think people have a bad interpretation with maths in poker. Poker is not about maths formulas – or like very easy ones. It’s not about complicated mathematical formulas. It’s just about some logic and some very easy maths. Some equations. It’s just about logic, I would say, more than maths equations, very simple.
TIMOFEY KUZNETSOV: Yes, it’s more about how you understand other people’s logic rather than about math.
RUI CAO: Yes, it’s not about the maths, I think, poker.
