There are many versions of this ancient melody. This version was from Southern Jiangsu, and expresses the heroic spirit of ancient soldiers and the mighty and fierce battles. This piece is often used in Kunqu Opera, Peking Opera and other dramas as an introduction or to accompany the general's appearance on stage, battle formation or other grand scenes. It is also often
used in festive occasions.
《將軍令》分很多種,有十番《將軍令》、弦索《將軍令》、揚琴《將軍令》等。這首是十番《將 軍令》,流傳於江蘇南部的蘇州、無錫、宜興一帶,「十」
是多的意思,「番」是新出花樣的意思, 以前還有「十樣錦」之稱。蘇南吹打在清代中葉(十八世紀)已十分盛行,樂隊之組合有三種形式, 其中的粗吹鑼鼓,使用大嗩吶和全套敲擊樂器,樂曲的曲式亦是由多段散曲同鼓段聯綴而成,形式 有一定程式的「大套」。 《將軍令》就是蘇南吹打中粗吹鑼鼓曲,表現了古代將士豪邁氣概和威武激烈的場面。該曲流 傳甚廣,崑劇、京劇等戲劇音樂中經常
用以開場鬧台或為將軍上場、擺陣出征等場面作伴奏,也常用於⺠間喜慶場面。
