When the outbreak first hit our town, everyone ran for the big places — the hospitals, the new police headquarters, the shopping centers — anywhere they thought the authorities would hold the line. But those places fell faster than anyone expected. I was never a fighter or a police officer. I was just the IT guy who used to fix the network in the old precinct the town shut down years ago. But when the streets went silent and the infected started drifting through the neighborhoods, I needed a place that had real walls, solid doors, and a chance of standing longer than the rest. So I went back to the one building I knew better than most: the abandoned police station on the edge of downtown.
What I found inside wasn’t safety — not at first — but shadows, echoes, and the first signs that someone else had tried to survive here before me. The doors were locked from the inside. The radios were still warm. And far below, in the holding cells, something kept hitting metal in a slow, steady rhythm. What started as a desperate search for shelter turned into a fight to fortify the precinct, rescue the last survivors hiding inside, and find a way to outlast the growing number of infected gathering outside our walls.
