JAPAN vs TURKIYE | Highlights | Men's Volleyball World Championship 2025. Japan loses to Turkey in straight sets, opening match of the 2025 Men's World Championships.
The 2025 Men's World Championships kicked off on Friday, September 12th in Manila, Philippines.
The Japanese men's volleyball team, ranked 5th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced Turkey, ranked 16th, on Saturday, September 13th, and was defeated in straight sets 0-3 (19-25, 23-25, 19-25), suffering a loss in their opening match.
In the first set, Onodera Futoshi scored the opening point with a B-quick, and then Onodera followed with a successful block to break the score. Ishikawa Yuki's pipe attacks and Miyaura Taketo's serve points led to a 9-6 lead, and the match progressed smoothly in the early stages. However, Turkey's powerful serves turned the tide, and Japan made some mistakes, leading to a 14-19 lead, forcing Japan to call a timeout. Nishiyama Hiroto and Nagatsuyu Motoki were sent onto the court as substitutes, and Nishiyama attempted to counterattack with a spike, but Japan lost the first set 19-25.
In the second set, Japan wanted to change the flow of the game. As Turkey's momentum began to wane, Japan's bench work improved and, with some mistakes from their opponents, Japan took an early lead of 12-10. However, Turkey also attacked with their serves and blocks, and Japan called a timeout when the score was 12-14. Turkey continued to serve powerfully, further extending their lead to 13-17, forcing Japan to call another timeout. Unable to get side outs successfully, Japan brought in relief server Kai Yuto to try to turn the tide. Kai's serve helped Japan close the gap to 19-21, but they were unable to take the set, losing two sets in a row 23-25.
With no room for error, Japan started the third set well, breaking with two blocks to take a 3-0 lead. However, Turkey's serves disrupted their passes, and they were overtaken at 4-5. They wanted to change the flow by making two substitutions, but they were unable to do so, and Japan took a timeout at 14-17. Japan continued to make mistakes after that, making the score 14-19. Struggling with Turkey's blocks and unable to find their rhythm, Japan was unable to perform to their best until the end, losing this set 19-25 and losing the set in straight sets 0-3.
The Japanese men's national team's next match will be against Canada (ranked 10th) on Monday, September 15th (national holiday). Please continue to support the Japanese men's national team.
