Bedsharing, the practice of parents and infants sleeping together in the same bed, can pose significant risks to safe sleep. While some parents choose bedsharing to foster bonding, ease breastfeeding, or address infant sleep difficulties, it is important to understand the associated dangers and take measures to ensure the safest sleep environment for infants.
Key Risks of Bedsharing
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS):
Bedsharing has been linked to an increased risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Infants are more vulnerable to suffocation, overheating, or airway obstruction when sleeping in an adult bed, which can contribute to the occurrence of SIDS.
Suffocation and Strangulation:
The presence of pillows, blankets, and soft bedding in adult beds poses a suffocation hazard for infants. An infant can easily become trapped in these items, leading to restricted breathing or suffocation. Additionally, the risk of strangulation from loose bedding or parents’ body movements increases in a shared sleep space.
Parental Roll-Over:
One of the most significant risks of bedsharing is the potential for a parent to unintentionally roll over onto the infant during sleep. This can lead to suffocation or severe injury due to the weight and size of the adult body compared to the infant.
Falls:
Infants can accidentally fall from the bed if they move or roll during sleep. Adult beds are often higher than cribs, making falls more dangerous and potentially leading to serious injury.
