Symi is known from mythology. On the island, according to tradition, the three Graces were born. It owes its current name, according to Diodorus the Sicilian, to the Nymph Symi, who according to legend mated with Poseidon, god of the sea. The fruit of their love was Chthonios, who became king of the first inhabitants of the island.

The island, along with the rest of the Dodecanese, changed hands several times in the 20th century: in 1912 the Dodecanese declared independence from the Ottomans as the Federation of the Dodecanese, although it was almost immediately occupied by Italy. The island was officially ceded to Italy in 1923 and on October 12, 1943 it was occupied by the Nazis. At the end of World War II, Symi was handed over by the Germans to the British, which resulted in it being enslaved for another three years. Symi finally returned to Greece in 1948.

Its stately architecture and stately people make up a place that went through enormous difficulties from conquerors in the 20th century, but with the main element of faith it resisted and created the conditions for a fairytale environment.
