Leroy Holmes
Leroy Holmes was an American songwriter, composer, arranger and conductor.
He worked for MGM and United Artists and during his time with MGM, he backed numerous vocalists, including Judy Garland. In 1954 he made what is possibly his best known recording, a version of the theme to the film The High and the Mighty. The song is known for its distinctive accompanying whistling, which was provided by Fred Lowery.
He moved to United Artists Records in the early 1960s, where he contributed to many compilations of movie themes, released albums under his own name and backed a succession of singers.
Midnight Cowboy
The main theme from the film "Midnight Cowboy" was written by famous British composer John Barry. Because Barry provided not just the main title theme but the complete soundtrack score, his music often enhanced the critical reception of a film, notably in this "Midnight Cowboy".
MHO
Leroy Holmes keeps some of the original soundtrack elements in his arrangement (the haunting harmonica) but at the same time adds some elements like wordless female vocals and some strong and exuberant brass intervals which accentuate the passion John Barry put into this marvelous composition.
The intro of this recording (with rhythm and strings entering the 'scene' majestically) takes my breath away :) A great arrangement of a great song.
Enjoy !
