Niccolo Machiavelli believed in the priority of what must be done over what we wish had been done. The problems he outlined in The Prince were not merely historical but perhaps perennial, and they still speak to public life today . Read allegorically, Machiavelli’s prince becomes the common person, the manager of a household, the head of a neighbourhood association, the leader of a start-up, or the parent choosing for posterity. All such figures face the same moral calculus. Some virtues are costly to sustain, and some vices may even be necessary for survival. If we take an absolutely authentic interpretation of The Prince, Machiavelli suggests that the account book of blame is not always a reliable measure of moral worth.
