Alizarin Crimson, PR83:1, (dihydroxyanthraquinone), is a synthetic version of the historical dye originally derived from the roots of rubia tinctorum, or madder plants, NR9. The hue varies depending on the methods of manufacturing, including the choice of metal salts, which are used to precipitate the dye material. Tin salts yield yellowish shades, aluminum yields vibrant reds, calcium yields bluish reds, iron yields deeper maroons, & chromium yields reddish browns. PR83:1 has a lightfastness of around 6 & excellent transparency, which makes it ideal for glazing techniques. I’m mixing this batch for a series of custom shellac inks & the vibrancy of this pigment is stunning.
