The decommissioning of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) on Maunakea was completed in July 2024. A fixed-point camera on the Subaru Telescope captured this process from April 29 to July 1, 2024.
The CSO operated from 1987 to 2015 near the summit of Maunakea on the Island of Hawai‘i. It was the first observatory on Maunakea to initiate the physical decommissioning process. It was completely removed, and the site was restored by July 1, 2024. Although it was the first to begin the decommissioning process, CSO was the second observatory to complete the physical decommissioning process, following the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo's Hōkū Keʻa Observatory.
