Central Park's new landscape project aims for LEED Gold certification

The Central Park Conservancy and the City of New York have announced plans to revamp Central Park's northern end by 2024.


The project aims to restore the area's ecosystem and improve the landscape around the Harlem Meer, according to Central Park Conservancy's website.


The project will remove Lasker Rink and Pool and connect the Harlem Meer with the Ravine stream valley in Central Park.


A boardwalk will be constructed across a new freshwater marsh for the public to observe wildlife. The boardwalk can be converted into a skating ribbon during winter.


A new indoor facility with a glass facade will be built onto the landscape of the park's north end and will oversee a pool, which will turn into a skating rink during winter.


The building will use a green roof that absorbs stormwater. It will also reduce the urban heat effect by making use of natural locally sourced materials such as stone, wood and glass. The structure aims to achieve LEED Gold certification.


According to the park's project page, recreational activities such as boating, fishing and wildlife observation will be introduced to the area once renovations are complete.


Construction on the project is to begin in the spring of 2021.
