Step inside a Kiva—the sacred heart of the Ancestral Puebloan world. Located at Pecos National Historical Park, these underground chambers were the center of spiritual life, community meetings, and ancient ceremonies for over 12,000 years of history.
In this video, we’re descending into a reconstructed kiva to see how the Pecos people connected with their ancestors and the earth.
3 Mind-Blowing Kiva Facts:
The Sipapu: Every kiva has a small hole in the floor called a sipapu, symbolizing the portal where humans first emerged into this world.
Natural AC: The underground design kept these rooms cool in the blistering New Mexico summer and warm during the snowy winters. ❄️☀️
The Great Kiva: At its peak, Pecos Pueblo was a massive trade hub, and its kivas were some of the most significant in the entire Rio Grande Valley.
Visit in 2026:
Pecos National Historical Park is just 35 minutes from Santa Fe. Entry is FREE in 2026! You can walk the Ancestral Sites Trail and even climb down the ladder into a restored kiva yourself.
